Röhrensee Animal Park | Animal Park & Petting Zoo
The Röhrensee Animal Park in the south of Bayreuth is a place where nature, relaxation, and animal observation come together in a particularly peaceful way. The park is considered one of the most popular local recreation areas in the city, is accessible year-round and free of charge, and is maintained by the city gardening office of Bayreuth. Its current form dates back to 1891, while the first animal enclosures were established in 1973. Visitors to the park therefore experience not only a recreational area with a lake and walking paths but also a piece of city history that has been continuously developed over many decades. Between old trees, flower beds, enclosures, and aviaries, a mix of quiet nature experience and family-friendly excursion backdrop emerges, making Röhrensee unmistakable. Animals, Enclosures, and Petting Zoo at Röhrensee
Those searching for Röhrensee animals or Röhrensee Animal Park Bayreuth usually want to know which animal species can actually be discovered here. Officially, the park lists, among others, Bennett kangaroos, Temminck's tragopans, and flamingos that live in naturally designed enclosures and aviaries. The animal park is not designed as a classic large zoo but as a quiet park facility where animal husbandry, plant life, and pathways are harmoniously integrated. Particularly striking is the combination of species-appropriate design and easily understandable knowledge transfer: attractively designed panels explain the peculiarities of the animals and provide visitors with small aha moments during the tour. Those who walk attentively through the park experience the animal park not only as a place for viewing but also as a learning space where biological diversity is vividly presented. This aligns well with the official description of the park as a place where relaxation and information belong together. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/))
A special search topic is the Röhrensee petting zoo. It is important to read the official notices carefully, as the opening is not permanent but occurs at set times and under certain conditions. The tourism page states that in good weather, the petting zoo opens every second Sunday from April to September between 2 PM and 5 PM without prior registration. The contact page adds that visits to the petting enclosure are also possible by prior arrangement. This is attractive for families because children can experience goats and chickens up close, and contact with the animals takes place in a supervised setting. This mix of closeness and structure is a core feature of the Röhrensee Animal Park: It does not rely on loud effects but on quiet encounters with animals that are embedded in a park-like landscape. This makes it particularly suitable for people who are out and about with children, grandparents, or simply in a relaxed atmosphere. ([bayreuth-tourismus.de](https://www.bayreuth-tourismus.de/sehenswertes/gaerten-und-parks/roehrensee/))
The animals at Röhrensee also represent a broader educational concept. The official website refers to stations such as the free-flight aviary of Asian ducks, Chinese mountain forests, living fossils, flamingos, crane island, Australia, large herbivores, and South America. These stations make it clear that the animal park does not just showcase individual enclosures but makes specific habitats and animal groups visible. This is complemented by QR codes at many stations, through which additional content, images, and information can be accessed. This makes the tour interesting for technically curious visitors because it combines classic park design with modern knowledge transfer. This is particularly helpful for families, school classes, and anyone who wants to combine their walk with a small learning effect. So, those searching for Röhrensee Animal Park or Röhrensee photos not only get beautiful pictures but also a well-structured natural space with clear thematic focuses. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/stationen/))
Parking and Access to Röhrensee Animal Park
A central keyword around the location is Röhrensee parking, and here the official contact page provides clear information. The address is Pottensteiner Straße in Bayreuth, and the coordinates are also provided: 49°55’58.1″N 11°34’16.4″E. Parking is available along Pottensteiner Straße; there are also designated spaces for buses, bicycles, and people with disabilities. Additionally, the page mentions further parking options in the park entrance area next to the restaurant parking lot, also for people with disabilities. For visitors arriving by car, this is practical because the access to the park is transparently and purposefully described. Those looking for a location with clear orientation thus receive a very good basis for access without having to search for long. This is an important advantage, especially for families with strollers or for older guests. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/kontakt/))
The routes from the region are also officially documented. From the direction of Kronach and Kulmbach, the route leads via the B2 towards the university, further via Universitätsstraße and Thiergärtner Straße. From the direction of Weiden and Kemnath, it goes via B22 towards the university, left into Universitätsstraße, and then also to Thiergärtner Straße. Those arriving via the A9 motorway take the exit south, head towards the university, and then follow Universitätsstraße and Thiergärtner Straße. For public transport, the contact page mentions the Deutsche Bahn to the main train station in Bayreuth, then further to the central bus station, and from there bus line 312 to the Röhrensee stop or line 314 to Saas Südfriedhof, Studiobühne stop, each with about a five-minute walk. Additionally, the official notices refer to bike paths along former railway lines and the Main bike path. Thus, Röhrensee is easily accessible not only for drivers but also for cyclists and public transport users. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/kontakt/))
For SEO searches like Röhrensee access, Röhrensee Bayreuth, or Röhrensee Animal Park Bayreuth, this combination of city location, clear road guidance, and multiple access options is important. The park is located in the southern part of Bayreuth and can thus be easily combined with other destinations in the city. This is also interesting because the area around Röhrensee is surrounded by other green spaces, the student forest, and connections to the Ecological-Botanical Garden in a larger green urban space. Visitors can plan the trip as a standalone destination or as part of a longer round trip through southern Bayreuth. Those traveling by bicycle particularly benefit from the well-described bike axes, while drivers will appreciate the proximity to the designated parking areas. The official information thus provides not only an address but a complete access picture that directly answers the search intent of users. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/kontakt/))
Playground, Boat Rental, and Gastronomy by the Lake
The Röhrensee Animal Park is not only an animal park but also a very family-friendly recreational area. This is especially evident in the large playground right by the Röhrensee, which, according to the official description, offers various climbing options, a spacious sand play area, and fitness equipment for all generations. In summer, the water play area is particularly popular. This quickly makes the park a real highlight for children, while adults simultaneously find an environment that invites walking, observing, and short stays. The official park page emphasizes that the facility functions as an intergenerational place and should not be reduced to just animal observation. This is where a significant appeal of the site lies: Those visiting with family can flexibly design their visit and switch between play, relaxation, and walking. This makes Röhrensee a location that is very well suited for both spontaneous and planned weekend excursions. ([bayreuth-tourismus.de](https://www.bayreuth-tourismus.de/sehenswertes/gaerten-und-parks/roehrensee/))
The experience also includes a kiosk, boat rental, and gastronomic offerings. The official website mentions a kiosk that is open in suitable weather and offers cakes and various drinks. In the summer months, it is also possible to rent a boat there; rentals usually start around Easter. Additionally, a barge rental is listed on the main page as a summer diversion. For visitors who wish to extend their stay, there are various inns and restaurants nearby. Among others, the Schwenk inn on Pottensteiner Straße, the Hanskaschbar, and the Stadtstrand, as well as other dining options in the vicinity, are mentioned. This is important for searches like Röhrensee boat rental or Röhrensee playground because real added value is created here: The park combines nature experience with simple recreational offerings, making longer stays enjoyable. Those who want to arrive relaxed can meaningfully combine a walk by the lake, a break at the playground, and a drink at the kiosk. ([bayreuth-tourismus.de](https://www.bayreuth-tourismus.de/sehenswertes/gaerten-und-parks/roehrensee/))
Even in winter, Röhrensee remains interesting. The tourism page points out that the lake is a popular destination for ice skaters when the ice is thick enough; the municipal sports office then decides on the release for safe use. This shows that the facility is used beyond the warm season and offers different experiences throughout the year. In summer, the water experience with boats, greenery, and playground takes center stage, while in winter, the lake can become an ice surface if the city permits its use. Thus, Röhrensee fulfills exactly the role that many local search queries reflect: It is not just an animal park but a seasonally vibrant open space. Families, walkers, or people looking for a quiet place find different reasons to visit here depending on the season. This makes the location particularly versatile and explains why the park in Bayreuth is so strongly associated with leisure, relaxation, and nature. ([bayreuth-tourismus.de](https://www.bayreuth-tourismus.de/sehenswertes/gaerten-und-parks/roehrensee/))
History of Röhrensee from Water Reservoir to Animal Park
The history of Röhrensee begins long before the current animal park. According to the official chronicle of the park and the tourism page, the name can be traced back to the wooden pipes that were stored for the first Bayreuth water supply. The oldest water supply was already put into operation in 1611, and the nearby Röhrenweiher served as a storage place for the pipes to keep them moist and prevent them from cracking. Later, this water area developed into a park space that has existed in its current form since 1891. Initially, Röhren- and Cunoweiher were merged under an association dedicated to beautifying the city and its surroundings. Thus, Röhrensee is not simply a modern recreational place but a historically grown ensemble whose origin is closely linked to the urban development of Bayreuth. This historical depth distinguishes the site from many other parks and gives it a special charm. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/der-tierpark-roehrensee/chronik/))
The further development also shows how strongly the place has changed. The chronicle describes, among other things, the accessibility of the island via arch bridges, the construction of a fountain, later war damage, and the reconstruction. In 1950/1955, the park was ceremoniously reopened after the war damage was removed. In 1973, the first animal enclosures were established on the initiative of the then mayor Hans Walter Wild, creating the animal park character of the area that visitors know today. Later, the playground was remodeled, transforming the former park with water areas into a versatile, family-friendly facility. This development is crucial for the current character of Röhrensee: Historical park elements, new qualities of stay, and animal husbandry merged into an environment that connects nature experience and city history. Thus, when visiting the park, one moves not only through a green area but through a piece of Bayreuth's cultural and landscape history. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/der-tierpark-roehrensee/chronik/))
The official park page complements this historical perspective with current projects such as the citizen grove and tree sponsorships. It describes that together with sponsorships, 100 trees for Bayreuth's vibrant south will be planted. Additionally, the citizen grove connects the Glocke district with the southern end of the animal park and creates an important link to the student forest, the Ecological-Botanical Garden of the university, and the city's environmental education environment. This shows that Röhrensee is not only historically grown but continues to be an active part of urban development. It remains not a static monument but a lively place where historical structure, ecological goals, and recreational use come together. This is precisely why the park works so well for search terms like Röhrenseepark Bayreuth or Röhrensee Animal Park: The facility is both tradition, local recreation, and a modern green project. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/))
Stations, Biodiversity, and Nature Education in the Park
An important reason why the Röhrensee Animal Park does not feel like an ordinary city park is its didactic structure. The official website lists several stations of the tour, including the free-flight aviary of Asian ducks, Chinese mountain forests, living fossils, flamingos, crane island, Australia, large herbivores, and South America, as well as the fern area. These stations make it clear that the park is thematically structured and that visitors are not only seeing individual animals but are guided into different habitats. Additionally, the use of QR codes, which complement many stations with additional content, images, and explanations, is noteworthy. This is particularly interesting for families, school groups, and curious visitors because the walk thus becomes a small learning journey. So, those searching for Röhrensee photos or Röhrensee animals not only receive pretty impressions but also a well-curated nature experience that connects animal husbandry and environmental education. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/stationen/))
The location in the green south of Bayreuth enhances this educational character. Official sources describe the animal park as an attraction for all generations, embedded in old tree populations by the lake. Botanical peculiarities and colorful summer flower beds complement the animal facilities and create an atmosphere that goes beyond mere animal observation. The connection to the Ecological-Botanical Garden is particularly exciting because the so-called path of biodiversity has created a new footpath with over 40 deciduous trees from all over Europe. Along the path, there are signs that facilitate species identification and explain the peculiarities of the trees. This way, Röhrensee itself becomes part of a larger nature and education space that makes the city of Bayreuth ecologically visible. This is a strong argument for searches for Röhrensee Bayreuth or Röhrensee Animal Park Bayreuth because the location is not isolated but integrated into an urban network of green spaces. ([tierpark-roehrensee.de](https://www.tierpark-roehrensee.de/))
Additionally, the park has been officially recognized as part of the UN Decade on Biological Diversity. The city of Bayreuth stated in 2020 that the Röhrensee Animal Park houses over 40 animal species from around the world and showcases rare species such as Wollemi and Baer's teal. This is a historical snapshot and not a current inventory list, but it clearly shows the park's commitment to biodiversity and education. This is where the special value of the facility lies: It is not only beautiful to look at but emphasizes the connection between recreation, biodiversity, and awareness of nature. For visitors, this means that a simple walk by the Röhrensee can quickly turn into a small discovery journey. Those who take in the tranquility of the lake, the animals, and the labeled stations understand why Röhrensee is so popular in Bayreuth: It offers not just entertainment but a well-readable, green urban experience. ([bayreuth.de](https://www.bayreuth.de/tierpark-roehrensee-erneut-ausgezeichnet/))
Photos, Walking Paths, and Special Experiences Around the Lake
The keyword Röhrensee photos is more than a search query for pretty images, as the park is indeed very photogenic. The official pages show lake views, well-maintained paths, water areas, large trees, flower beds, and insights into the animal facilities. Particularly striking is the combination of calm water, old tree backdrops, and clearly structured animal stations. This creates motifs that appear differently in various seasons: In spring, blooming and fresh green take center stage, in summer, the lake and treetops reflect, in autumn, the park becomes warm in color, and in winter, ice and quiet paths shape the image, provided the area is released. For content and SEO, this is interesting because searchers often associate the word photos with a visual expectation. Röhrensee not only meets this expectation but connects it with a very genuine, un-staged park atmosphere. This makes it a worthwhile destination for walks, family photos, or simply for a short photo stroll through nature. ([bayreuth-tourismus.de](https://www.bayreuth-tourismus.de/sehenswertes/gaerten-und-parks/roehrensee/))
The walking paths themselves are also a central part of the experience. The park is described by the tourism page as a local recreation area where one can walk, relax, and leave everyday life behind. Additionally, there are guided tours that take place on certain days of the year and allow a behind-the-scenes look. The park page also mentions a path of connection, where tree sponsorships and the citizen grove play a larger role. This creates not just a single tour but a network of paths, themes, and transitions that place Röhrensee in a larger landscape context. So, those looking for a quiet, barrier-free, and content-rich urban excursion find a place here that is suitable for both short visits and longer stays. The mix of lake, animals, playground, and educational paths explains why the park encompasses so many different search queries. ([bayreuth-tourismus.de](https://www.bayreuth-tourismus.de/sehenswertes/gaerten-und-parks/roehrensee/))
Particularly helpful for visitors is that Röhrensee can be used differently in every season. In summer, boat rental, playground, and garden atmosphere are in the foreground, while in winter, ice skating on the lake can be an additional experience as soon as the city releases the ice. For families, this seasonality is an advantage because the park continually provides new reasons for a visit. So, those searching today for a quiet park scene, tomorrow for animals, and the day after for an outing with a boat and kiosk can experience the same place differently. This versatility makes Röhrensee a strong location for organic search terms like Röhrensee lake, Röhrensee photos, or Röhrensee parking. It is a place that is sought online on many levels and shows even more facets offline than a single image could convey.
([bayreuth-tourismus.de](https://www.bayreuth-tourismus.de/sehenswertes/gaerten-und-parks/roehrensee/))
I was surprised to find a small Tiergarten in Bayreuth. It’s a very nice and peaceful area. Although there are only a limited number of animals and birds, it’s still wonderful to have such a lovely place in Bayreuth. There’s also free parking right outside.

We visited this place with our dog! So dogs are allowed in this place. 🫶🏻 It has a lot of birds like 🦚peacock and different cranes and animals like deer and ram. The ram 🐏 is very friendly and wants to be petted! So a wonderful park if you’re looking to engage with animals. The park has a lot of beautiful trees and a muddy colored small lake. It’s kid friendly as before the animal park starts, there is a big kids playground. This is a nice weekend outing destination if you live in the city and feel like escaping in nature. 🥰 There are also no entrance fees.

A very small wildlife Park where you can visit with your family, especially children's. They will be amazed by seeing those beautiful birds. I didn't need any ticket but I'm not sure if that's the case. However, it will take only 30 minutes to go around the lake and see all the living animals with the cute expressions.
